The university has its own campus, so-called “Kazgugrad”, on land between Timiryazev Street, Al-Farabi Avenue, the “Yessentai” (“Vesnovka”) river, and the Botanical Garden. The main building (GUK) is 15 stories tall and hosts the university administration as well as the History, Economics, Law, Philology and Journalism faculties.
Al-Farabi Kazakh National University has the largest campus in Kazakhstan with an area of 100 hectares, in one of the most beautiful areas of Almaty. The education infrastructure of the campus consists of 13 education buildings with a total area of 165,000 m² and scientific laboratories with a total area of 18,940 m².
There are seventeen dormitories on campus and three more faculties: Geography, Biology, Preparatory, and International Relations.
The departments of Physics, Mechanics-Mathematics, and Chemistry were formerly in the city; in 2011 they moved to newly constructed buildings on campus.
Al-Farabi Kazakh National Library today is one of the oldest libraries of universities in Kazakhstan and among the largest university libraries in the Republic of Kazakhstan, located on the territory of the Kazakh National University. The varied content of the library books fund is universal and has more than 2.5 million different types of documents.
The Electronic Library for information transmission method is divided into zones: graphics, multimedia, audio, video, world resources, and Treasury resources.

Al Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) has launched the second phase of the development of university’s research and educational biomedical cluster in collaboration with the Severance hospital at Yonsei University. This is a part of transforming KazNU into modern research university and addressing the global shortages of health professionals.
The new program will provide students access to two major facilities – a modern diagnostic center and the Higher School of Public Health (Faculty of Medicine), which would train medical personnel for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. Students will study the management of modern medical facilities and infrastructure and will have practical training at the operating unit and the medical departments, rehabilitation and screening centers, technical equipment of laboratories.
In order to expand medical training facilities, KazNU negotiated with the city administration transfer of the Clinical Hospital of Almaty City under KazNU management. Al Farabi KazNU envisions transforming the Clinical Hospital into the national center of advanced medicine in collaboration with a team of specialists from South Korea.
Faculty and Teaching
The university consists of 16 functioning faculties, 67 departments, 32 scientific research institutes and centres, a techno-park; more than 2000 professors, doctors, scientific candidates and PhD’s, more than 100 academicians of the largest academies, more than 40 honoured figures of the Republic of Kazakhstan, about 40 laureates of State and nominal awards of RK and 40 laureates of the young scientists’ awards, 47 fellows of state scientific fellowships. More than 20,000 students, post-graduates and PhD student study at KazNU, and there are more than 2500 faculty members working at KazNU, including 400 doctors of science, professors and more than 800 candidates of science and associate professors. More than 18000 students and masters at the multilevel system of higher professional education study in the university. Al-Farabi KazNU cooperate with 418 largest international universities of the world on the realization of joint international educational programs, exchange programs for students and internship.
The climate of Kazakhstan (excluding south) is sharply continental with average temperature between -4 °C and -19 °C in January and between +19…+26°C in July. In winter temperature may decrease down to -45°C, and in summer rise up to +30.
One can experience all four seasons on the territory of Kazakhstan with frosty winter, blossoming spring, heating summer and scarlet autumn. Cold winter starts in November and lasts till the end of April.
